   Résumé
   Michael est un bon comédien, mais il est le seul à le savoir. Il est têtu, travaille dans le sublime, veut monter un spectacle d'avant-garde. Au lieu de quoi, il trouve enfin un contrat à la télévision, dans une série populaire assez lamentable, parce qu'il a eu la bonne idée de se déguiser en femme. Il sera Tootsie, à l'écran comme à la ville, car il lui est difficile de révéler son subterfuge. Cette situation crée des quiproquos prévisibles.
   Commentaire
   Le principe du travesti est généralement une facilité et pour les scénaristes et pour les comédiens. Ici, il fonctionne à merveille. D'abord parce que le scénario est remarquable et se lit à plusieurs niveaux (en fait, c'est un hymne à la féminité), ensuite parce que Sydney Pollack et Dustin Hoffman ont trouvé le juste ton. Tootsie est vraisemblable. Le spectateur lui-même, pourtant prévenu, éprouve quelquefois un certain trouble devant l'hermaphrodisme du personnage. Il faut dire aussi qu'il s'agit d'une comédie satirique (ô! les milieux de la télévision!). Mais le rire et l'émotion flirtent constamment.
